Bedrooms Removal

You may have odors in your bedroom because of pets, shoes, airflow problems, bedding, or stale clothing. If you look at how a bedroom is used, it’s really not surprising that odors tend to pile up there.

Many times we neglect bedrooms, especially since there are so many other things that demand our immediate attention. Cleaning in the home is often focused on family living spaces, such as the kitchen and the family room or TV room, so that the bedrooms get short shrift.

Pets

First, look at whether or not pets use your room frequently. All pets do create odors, and they can be extremely unpleasant odors. While a person who is confined to a bedroom may want the company of a pet, it is important that they not “mark” your bedroom as their territory.

If you do end up with a pet “accident” in the bedroom, you should clean it immediately with an enzymatic cleaner. It is worth the time to train animals to use litter boxes or trays and to teach them that the bedroom is not their space. It is also necessary to bathe animals frequently, especially if they spend a great deal of time in the bedroom.

Shoes

The bedroom is the spot for shoes to rest, and that means all the smells associated with shoes will collect there as well. You can find a different place for shoes, such as a mudroom or hallway, eliminating the possibility of them being closed up in a bedroom or closet. Alternatively, sprinkle each shoe with a bit of talcum powder each night after you remove them. This will help with shoe odor and foot odor.

Airflow

We enjoy our comfort and being cozy, which is a great feeling. However, keeping windows closed all of the time can cause a stuffy smell and lingering scents in a bedroom. Keeping rooms closed all of the time can also lead to the buildup of condensation, mold, and damp smells.

During the months when it is possible, leave the window open a crack for at least an hour a day. If that isn’t possible, use a fan on low to circulate the air, and leave the bedroom door open for at least some period of time each day.

Bedding

Bedding should be washed frequently, even pillowcases and quilts. Quilts and blankets are sometimes bulky and difficult to wash, but they need to be cleaned to remove stale smells, pet odors, and mildew from the room. When you wash quilts, also air out the pillows by hanging them outside.

Stale Clothing

Clothing that isn’t worn frequently, or clothing that has been worn but is allowed to hang or pile up will cause an unpleasant smell in a bedroom. Clothing picks up odors as it is worn, be they sweat, cigarette smoke (even if you don’t smoke yourself), environmental smells, and stains. Wash clothing frequently.
